Abstract
Impressionism, emerging in the late 19th century as a radical departure
from traditional artistic techniques, has had a profound and enduring influence
on the development of modern art. This study investigates the core principles
of Impressionism, such as the use of light, color, and short brushstrokes, and
explores how these elements have shaped subsequent movements in modern art,
including Post-Impressionism, Fauvism, and Abstract Expressionism. The
objective is to examine the ways in which Impressionism redefined artistic
representation and technique, challenging established norms and encouraging
artists to prioritize subjective experience over realistic portrayal. The study
utilizes a comparative historical approach, analyzing key works of
Impressionist artists like Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir
alongside their successors, to trace the evolution of modern artistic methods.
Findings reveal that the Impressionists' focus on capturing the fleeting
effects of light and their loose, dynamic brushwork directly influenced modern
movements that emphasized abstraction, emotional expression, and innovative
uses of color and form. Additionally, the rejection of rigid academic
traditions by Impressionists paved the way for more experimental and diverse
approaches to visual art in the 20th century. The implications of this research
suggest that Impressionism not only transformed artistic practices but also
altered the public perception of art, making it more accessible and emotionally
resonant.
